The future is bright for the CBD beauty industry. While visiting this year’s Indie Beauty Expo, every other booth sold a form of CBD beauty; from serums to creams and everything in between. So why are so many companies investing in CBD?
According to Justin Amesbury, Head of R&D at Lazarus Naturals, “The beauty industry represents a tremendous amount of global capital changing hands year over year, and all indications are that the industry is set to continue to grow as consumers continue to push for novel, effective, and sustainable products. According to Reuters, the cosmetics and beauty industry was valued at $532 billion dollars in 2017, and that figure is expected to grow to $805 billion by 2023. A large segment of the beauty industry centers around components with anti-inflammatory properties to reduce redness, repair damaged skin, and maintain healthy, youthful skin. CBD has been shown to have powerful anti-inflammatory properties which would make for an excellent use case in the beauty industry for topical applications. Additionally, the hemp oil CBD is commonly derived from is packed with Omega-3 fatty acids, which have long been incorporated into topical formulations due to their ability to maintain strong, smooth, and well-hydrated skin.”
With a value prediction of $805 billion by 2023, I wondered which large companies would start swallowing up smaller companies to get a chunk of that profit. In Amesbury’s opinion, “that is a very difficult thing to predict, as the legal and regulatory framework surrounding CBD and hemp derivatives is unclear, leading to major players across a number of markets being reticent to jump in. We have already seen global players such as Coca Cola express interest in developing CBD products in the wellness beverage space. It’s not much of a stretch to imagine that one of Coca Cola’s biggest competitors, Nestle, will be closely monitoring the progress Coca Cola makes with this product line and the CBD space at large. Nestle currently operates over 2000 brands, including 30% of L’Oreal. It’s plausible that once one or two of these products from a major brand take hold, larger companies will start to incorporate CBD into products across all of the market segments they operate in. Once the floodgates open, so to speak, I think we will see all of the major players in the beauty and cosmetics segments begin to invest in product development centered around sustainable CBD beauty products. That said, the legal status of CBD globally continues to be nebulous, so I think we will continue to see smaller companies make big strides with respect to novel product development in the cannabis space in the near term.”
