Editor’s Note: “Instagram Fashion Finds” is a new blog series featuring designers and brands I’ve stumbled across in my endless Instagram scrolling. While some of the designers are couture and others ready-to-wear, each brand has caught my eye because of their visual aesthetic and overall style vibe.
Danish contemporary jewelry designer Jo Riis-Hansen was born and raised in Copenhagen. A trained goldsmith, she worked for more than a decade in her own shop and with a jewelry company before she embarked on a journey in 2016, exploring ceramics.
Riis-Hansen is fascinated with surfaces, textures and the contrast between soft and hard that transpire in the metal and exploring the boundaries of her materials. She is interested in proportions and diversities: the moment before “too little “ becomes “too much”. Working with the size and weight, she sets up different dogmas to work under to challenge herself, to see what happens outside of her comfort zone.
For the Etage Project’s series, her goal was to free herself from the restrictions of her craft and work one-on-one with the process, metal, and object. Each creation has a name representing a series of a certain number of one-of-a-kind editions. What’s unique to her work is that she doesn’t sketch prior to creation, instead she experiments with her hands, yielding her personal and emotional creative process.
