Dermalogica is currently on my radar but the truth is, it’s been on my radar for years. My mom introduced me to the brand in my teens when I suffered from bad acne. After trying every product on the market, she took me to Dermalogica on Montana in LA for a facial and I’ve been hooked on the brand ever since.
In the 80’s United Kingdom-trained skin therapist Jane Wurwand recognized that continuing skin and body therapy education was practically non-existent in the United States. Unlike fellow UK estheticians, US students entered the industry licensed yet under-trained, and worse, under-respected. She put her education in action, opening a small classroom in Marina del Rey, California under the name The International Dermal Institute (IDI) where she invited licensed skin therapists to get hands-on with the postgraduate training so critical to making them competitive in the business.
While teaching at IDI, Jane realized no product line embraced her belief of skin health as opposed to “beauty,” so she developed Dermalogica. The result was a product line free of common irritants and ingredients that could cause breakouts (including lanolin, SD alcohol, mineral oil, artificial colors and fragrances) that would improve skin health.
While the line is expansive, my personal favorites for the morning are the Special Cleansing Gel, Active Moist, and Hydrablur Primer. For the evenings, I turn to a Precleanse before the Special Cleansing Gel followed by Phyto Replenish Oil, Active Moist and the newest product: Stress Positive Eye Lift.
