A weekly column on Fashion Unfiltered in which social media sensation @ChoupettesDiary, famed for bringing to life the persona of Karl Lagerfeld’s feline darling, Choupette, offers up her weekly musings. Between my love affair with the Instagram account @HillaryStreetStyle and The Observer telling me that Instagram is making me a self-obsessed twat, I’m having mixed emotions. It’s not helping that this week Georgia May Jagger also voiced her distaste for Instagram. Let me know how you feel after reading this week’s social media news.
The Woman Behind @HillaryStreetStyle Proves Clinton is Pretty Chic
As a public figure, Hilary Clinton’s style is a hot-button issue, and social media commentators often criticize her love of pantsuits. Yesterday, FU imagined how some of fashion’s top stylists would dress the 2016 presidential candidates, and now, Yahoo! Style has found my political fashion soulmate: the woman behind@HillaryStreetStyle. The Instagram account’s side-by-side posts of street style, runway looks, and other celebs vs. Hillary (who looks pretty damn chic in all the images, by the way) keeps my paws swiping.
Instagram Is Making Everyone Self-Obsessed (Including Moi)
You’re so vain, you probably think this story is about you. I may be egocentric, but I’m not the only one posting selfies on Instagram. According to The Observer, Instagram is making everyone self-obsessed. Obvi! Some users are taking it as far as to opt for plastic surgery to cut down on having to photo edit. I’m all for Botox and injectables, but when your own friends don’t even recognize you in your selfies, it might be time for an Instagram intervention.
Tiffany & Co. Takes Over Snapchat and Subways
I’m seeing the world through Tiffany blue-colored lenses. As part of its #LoveNotLike campaign, Tiffany & Co. has launched its own Snapchat lens, which offers real-time special effects and sounds. WWD reports that Tiffany will also have a sponsored geofilter, which shoppers will be able to access at its 93 U.S. locations through August 31. As if there weren’t enough engagement rings and diamonds being thrown (virtually) in your face, Luxury Daily wants you to know that the brand is also staging a four-week out of home display within Grand Central North that began on June 13. Just in case you want to casually walk your significant other by the ads.
Georgia May Jagger Thinks Instagram Models Are So Passé
How dare you call Georgia May Jagger Instagram-famous! The model recently proclaimed that Instagram models are over. “I think it’s sad that people are hiring people based on their followers, because it doesn’t really make sense if people aren’t on it,” she told Yahoo! Style. While I agree that a model’s value isn’t solely based on her Instagram stats, what Jagger said next surely got her a few (dozen) unfollows. “It’s kind of a weird thing. My whole theory is that [Instagram] shouldn’t be that important.” No one is forcing you to be on Instagram. Okay, well maybe her publicist is.
Simone Mariposa Says We Should All Just #WearWhatWeWant
Don’t give plus-size blogger Simone Mariposa that “one size fits all” bull. According to Refinery29, she is fed up with being told what to where for her size and apparently a lot of other people are, too. Taking to social media to express her frustration (because where else would you go?), she started the hashtag movement, #WeWearWhatWeWant. Currently there are 1,565 Instagram photos using the hashtag, and hey, I might just do it myself. Who wants to seemoi in an itsy bitsy teeny weenie bikini?
